LEADERSHIP 9
This course offers students an exciting opportunity to develop leadership skills through service learning and hands-on involvement in school and community projects. Students will explore their own interests and strengths while investigating local needs, planning events, and reflecting on how their leadership can create positive change. Along the way, they will build essential skills in public speaking, goal setting, organization, time management, communication, and collaboration preparing them to lead with confidence and purpose. A key component of the course is the Eagle Points Project, which challenges students to actively engage in school life by earning points through participation in events, clubs, volunteering, and creative contributions, recognizing and rewarding their efforts to build a vibrant REMSS community.
LEADERSHIP 10
This course offers students an exciting opportunity to develop leadership skills through service learning and hands-on involvement in school and community projects. Students will also participate in Serve Crew, a rotating team that takes on weekly service leadership responsibilities focused on improving the class and school environment.
LEADERSHIP 11/12 (BY APPLICATION)
Senior Leadership is designed to give students the opportunity to further develop their self-confidence and leadership skills so that they can continue to contribute positively to their school local and global community. It is an events-oriented course in which students will engage in service learning by working together to plan, coordinate, and run various events for the school and wider community. Students will also be learning a variety of theories around leadership and then working to connect this understanding to their own passions and interests. Students in this class will sometimes be volunteering/working outside of class time, working to launch and run said events. Students will also be challenged to develop specialties related to running large scale events, such as audio and lighting technicians, presenting, administration and coordination, and other areas related to producing high quality events.
LINK CREW 11/12 (BY APPLICATION)
Link Crew is a leadership and mentorship program where Grade 11 and 12 students support the successful transition of Grade 9s into high school. Link Leaders complete specialized training to develop mentorship, communication, relationship-building, and event-based leadership skills. Throughout the year, Leaders work closely with two small groups of Grade 9 students, acting as positive role models, academic guides, and community-builders.
The time commitment includes mandatory 3 days of training before school begins, regular Monday morning classes for ongoing leadership development, and scheduled monthly Academic Follow-Ups during Flex where Leaders facilitate lessons designed to build Grade 9 confidence, connection, and academic readiness. In addition, Leaders participate in various social follow-ups, school events, and ongoing communication through Microsoft Teams to help Grade 9s navigate high school life. Link Crew is an opportunity for senior students to grow as leaders, strengthen their interpersonal skills, contribute to school culture, and make a meaningful impact on the REMSS community.
PEER MENTORING 11/12 (BY APPLICATION)
Peer Mentoring is a scheduled leadership and mentorship course for Grade 11 and 12 students who are interested in supporting junior students in a classroom environment. Peer Mentors are placed in Grade 9 or 10 classes based on their strengths, interests, and experience, and work under the supervision of a sponsor teacher to help create a positive, productive learning environment. This course focuses on developing leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills. Peer Mentors model professionalism through attendance, punctuality, engagement, and strong work habits, while also learning how to support younger students academically, socially, and emotionally. Throughout the semester, students participate in bi-weekly mentorship challenges that allow them to apply specific skills in their placement classrooms, build meaningful connections with the juniors they support, and reflect on their impact. Peer Mentoring is a reflective course that requires ongoing written reflections, self-assessment, and one final summative assignment. These reflections emphasize personal growth, mentorship development, and the ability to thoughtfully evaluate successes, challenges, and next steps.
This course is highly rewarding and is ideal for students interested in helping professions such as education, counselling, social work, psychology, health care, or any field that requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse learners.
RECREATION & LEADERSHIP 11/12 (BY APPLICATION)
Students interested in this course must be highly self-motivated, responsible, and committed. Also, students who take this course must have a great deal of after-school and weekend availability.
Recreation and Leadership is a course for those students who enjoy both physical activity and taking on leadership roles. This course involves the study of essential elements and basic principles of organization and leadership. Students will be put into leadership roles in the school, including officiating and scorekeeping for our athletics program, where they will be able to practice and apply these leadership elements and principles. Also, students will experience a wide variety of recreational activities through field trips in hopes that they will pursue a life-long healthy lifestyle. The course will culminate in a year-end camping trip. Students are required to complete 95 hours of service as a component of this course.
