There are a number of programs available throughout the District. ​Please check out the following information.

Youth Train in Trades
​What
  • Foundation or apprenticeship training in a trade
  • SkilledTradesBC recognized technical trades training
Why
  • Learn skills and gain experience
  • Earn high school and post-secondary credits at the same time (dual credit)
  • Tuition-free for eligible SD35 students
Who
  • Will be in Grade 11-12
  • Intention to graduate
  • Interest in the trades
  • Committed to learn the skills, knowledge and attitude required to do well in the field
When
  • Most programs begin in February 2024
    • Professional Cook begins September 2023
  • Programs are full-time for 1 or 2 semesters

Youth Work in Trades
​What it is?
  • A program of up to four high school courses for students working or who have worked in a trade regulated by SkilledTradesBC (formerly ITA BC).
Student Benefits
  • Get paid while completing up to four elective courses
  • Acquire skills employers want
  • Get a head start on your career
  • Use 480 paid work hours towards your apprenticeship
  • Have a seamless transition from school to work
  • May become eligible for a $1000 Youth WORK in Trades Award
Win $1000 with Youth WORK! 
Award criteria:
  • Be registered as an apprentice by Langley School District by June 30, 2024
    • Award will change to a scholarship starting July 1, 2024
  • Graduate with a Dogwood Diploma or Adult Dogwood
  • Complete the four Youth WORK in Trades courses
  • Maintain a C+ average or better in Grade 12 courses
  • Have at least 900 work hours reported to SkilledTradesBC by August 31 after the school year the student turns 19 (see bottom of page for more information)
Student Requirements
  • Have parent/guardian permission
  • Be 15-19 years old
  • Be working or previously worked in one of the 100 SkilledTradesBC (formerly ITA BC) regulated trades

Work and Volunteer Experience (WAVE)

What
  • An elective course that students complete outside of school hours at an employer’s place of business. Students work, volunteer or job shadow in an entry-level capacity. WAVE students will earn credits and gain experience in the industry of their choice.
Student Benefits
  • Complete up to two courses outside of school in an area of interest
  • Gain work or volunteer experience in almost any industry/occupation
  • Work with a new employer or continue where the student is already working/volunteering
  • Have a smoother transition from school to work
  • Complete WAVE on weekends, evenings, school holidays and breaks
  • Learn job search strategies with the support of a WAVE teacher and Career Advisor
Requirements
  • Be in grade 10-12
  • Have parent/guardian permission
  • Be prepared to work/volunteer 80-170 hours
  • Complete WAVE Student Guides
Ready to Register
  • Complete a WAVE registration form with your Career Advisor

Early Childhood Education
​

What
  • Students can earn post-secondary credits towards a university program
  • Students complete course requirement to become an Early Childhood Education Assistant and earn post-secondary credits towards the Early Childhood Education Certificate
 Why
  • Learn skills and gain experience
  • Earn high school and post-secondary credits at the same time
  • Pay no tuition (for eligible high school students)
Who
  • Grade 12 students
  • Intention to graduate
  • Genuine interest in pursuing post-secondary education
  • Commitment to learning the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to do well in the field
When
  • ECE program starts in September 2023
